SIX SIGMA – It's not the tools that make the difference

This presentation provides a fact-based assessment of the key Lean and Six Sigma tools used across the 140-plus projects so far completed in the Commonwealth Bank Lean Six Sigma program, CommWay, then identifies the five critical success factors that have “made the difference” in terms of the program’s success. The presentation is designed to provide practical and actionable ideas for process improvement programs in companies ranging in size from 3 to 30,000 people.

Enterprise Architecture

The August Newsletter features a well-publicised software disaster (the FBI's Virtual Case File), where lack of an enterprise architecture was a key contributor to failure.

But what actually IS enterprise architecture? Is it just the latest ‘silver bullet’ or something we always did, dressed in new clothes? And how much of it is necessary for success? Would the FBI have actually achieved a better result by spending 2 years on Enterprise Architecture before they started development, or would 2 weeks be enough?

Integrating lightweight software processes into a regulated environment

Medical software development is highly regulated with a focus on assuring product safety and efficacy. The regulations strongly recommend the use of process-centric life cycle models that implement and verify predetermined specifications. These heavyweight processes are adapted to ensure that the product meets its requirements and quality attributes. They are also easy to audit!

Organisational Benchmarking – How well is your company doing?

In this challenging economic environment, companies are focused on improving innovation and effectiveness. As a result, more organisations than ever are adopting benchmarking practices. Benchmarking can help you make the most of your company’s IT investments – giving you objective measurements and insight into your application development and maintenance performance: How well is your company doing? How do you compare to others? Where do you need to improve? Making the right decisions about improving Application Development and Maintenance (ADM) capability is not easy.

TOM – ‘Towards One Methodology’ at Westpac

After an extensive evaluation, in late 2005, Westpac purchased a new methodology and project and systems development tools to use as an integrated platform for all projects, both business and IT, for deployment across Australia, New Zealand and BT Financial Services.

Many areas within Westpac either had no tools or where there were tools there was no standardisation across the organisation. Another problem was that some of the tools did not share information with others. There was also no consistency around an overall process or methodology.

Functional Size Measurement: A Framework for Effective Software Project Estimation, Management and Control

For many members of the software delivery community, their view of Functional Size Measurement (or Function Point Analysis) is limited to understanding it as a technique that delivers a number of Function Points for a software project that can be used for benchmarking delivery productivity or, possibly, as an aid to augment an existing project estimation process.

Problems and Software Process Improvement

As part of a PhD program, Jim Kelly has recently surveyed a number of Software Process Improvement experts to understand the problems with SPI. At this presentation he will describe some of the problems that companies have had with Software Process Improvement implementations.
